Linux provides many advantages over other operating systems, Open-source software availability for everyone to contribute, modify, and enhance the source code. It also allows the users to download its software for free and is less vulnerable and more secure than Windows operating systems. A workshop “Linux Essentials” was conducted by Department of Computer Science and Engineering in association with computer society of India on 15-09-2022 for the Final Year Computer Science and Engineering Students. The resource person for the programme was Mr. M. Madan Prasad, Red Hat Certified Instructor, Advantage Pro, Vectra TechnosoftPvt. Ltd., Chennai. Dr. G. Aravind Swaminathan, HOD/CSE welcomed and introduced the resource person. Mr. J. S. Sukumar, Linux Expert, Advantage Pro, Vectra TechnosoftPvt. Ltd. Chennai gave an introduction about the workshop. Mr. Radhesh Kumar, Managing Director, Advantage Pro, Vectra TechnosoftPvt. Ltd. Chennai also gave an introduction about the session. Mr. M. Madan Prasad, started the workshop by insisting the essentials of Linux. He taught about the advantage of using open source, advantage of Linux, the purpose of Red Hat Linux and the opportunities open for the Linux developer. He gave a live demo on Linux and taught the activities of Linux dashboard, which is similar to windows task bar. He demonstrated the working process of various Linux commands, executed the commands in Linux Terminal, taught the three modes in Vim (command mode, insert mode and execute mode), explained the various types of users in Linux (root user, system user and normal user), taught the two types of user group in Linux (Primary group and the Secondary group) and executed a sample shell scripting. Dr. E, Manohar, Associate Professor/CSE, gave the vote of thanks. The programme was arranged and coordinate by Dr. E. Manohar and Mr. Mukesh Krishnan under the guidance of Dr. G. AravindSwaminathan, HOD/CSE.
