On 14.06.2022 A session was arranged on “Environment Management and Sustainability” to mark the World Environment Day by the Entrepreneurship Development Cell of ECE department and IIC through offline mode. The Session was handled by Dr.P.S.Suja Pon Mini, Professor/Chemistry, Francis Xavier Engineering College, from 3.00 PM – 04.20 PM.

The Seminar was presided by Mrs J Friska HOD/ECE and jointly coordinated by Dr. R Prem Ananth, IIC Convener, IIC Innovation Ambassador for "Design thinking & Innovations", Assistant professor, Francis Xavier Engineering College.

The resource person explained the reasons for commemorating the World Environment Day and stressed the need for protecting the environment to sustain the renewable resources. During her speech she explained the causes of environmental degradation such as Global Warming, Ozone Depletion, Deforestation, land degradation, biodiversity loss and air pollution. She highlighted Chipko or Appiko Movements. Chipko Movement, which aimed at protecting forests in the Himalayas. In Karnataka, a similar movement took a different name, ‘Appiko’, which means to hug. On 8 September 1983, when the felling of trees was started in Salkani forest in Sirsi district, 160 men, women and children hugged the trees and forced the woodcutters to leave. They kept vigil in the forest over the next six weeks. Only after the forest officials assured the volunteers that the trees will be cut scientifically and in accordance with the working plan of the district, did they leave the trees.

She also presented the Sustainable Development and said that Environment and Economy are interdependent and need each other. Sustainable development is, in this sense, a development that meets the basic needs of all, particularly the poor majority, for employment, food, energy, water, housing, and ensures growth of agriculture, manufacturing, power and services to meet these needs. She explained the strategies for Sustainable Development such as promotion of the use of non-conventional sources of energy, LPG, Gobar Gas in rural areas, CNG in urban areas, Wind Power, Mini-hydel Plants, Bio-pest Control, Bio-composting and Solar Power through Photovoltaic Cells.

The resource person used lot of examples while explaining the concept of sustainable development. Students enjoyed the session and raised lot of questions and contributed a lot during the presentation also. 50 students and 3 faculty members participated in the program.

The interaction between the students and the resource person was highly motivating to all the students. Session ended with the feedback of Students. The Program was organized by Dr. R Prem Ananth, IIC Convener, IIC Innovation Ambassador for "Design thinking & Innovations", Assistant professor, Francis Xavier Engineering College.
