On 17.08.2023 Entrepreneurship Development Cell and IIC in association with the Electronics and Communication Engineering department organized an expert talk on “Government Schemes to Support Engineering Students to Develop Startups”. The session was handled by Er. Ganesan, General Manager, District Industries Centre, Tirunelveli. 67 SC/ST students and 2 faculties participated in the program. This event was coordinated by Dr. R Prem Ananth, IIC Convener, IIC Innovation Ambassador for "Design thinking & Innovations", Assistant professor, Francis Xavier Engineering College. This event was conducted with the guidance of Dr. Lourdes Poobala Rayen, IIC President.
The program started with the welcome address by Dr.Lourdes Poobala Rayen, IIC President and gave introduction about the government schemes to support the development of the startup. He also introduced the resource person Er.Ganesan, General Manager, District Industries Centre, Tirunelveli. The guest speaker started his speech and said that the Government is supporting the SC/ST students through number of schemes to develop startups such as Annal Ambedkar Business Champions Scheme (AABCS), Tamil Nadu SC/ST Startup etc.
The guest speaker started his speech by explaining the role of District Industries Centre in the process of developing industries in the district. He explained Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme (PMFME), Unemployed Youth Employment Generation Programme (UYEGP), Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), New Entrepreneur cum Enterprise Development Scheme (NEEDS) and Annal Ambedkar Business Champions Scheme (AABCS).
He stated that the objectives of the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme help the Micro Food entrepreneurs for the Technology up-gradation of the existing Micro Food Processing Enterprises by increasing, Branding and Marketing support. The guest speaker also explained the Statup India schemes and the Startup TN initiatives to develop startups. Tirunelveli being the Regional Startup Hub and IT destination as decided by the Tamil Nadu Government, lot of new initiatives are taking place in Tirunelveli.
Similarly, he explained the objectives and eligibility criteria for Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) and New Entrepreneur cum Enterprise Development Scheme (NEEDS). As the participants are SC/ST students the speaker explained the Annal Ambedkar Business Champions Scheme (AABCS) in a detailed manner because it is 100% meant for the SC/ST persons. In Annal Ambedkar Business Champions Scheme the project cost include land, plant, machinery, testing equipment and computing devices with cost of land not exceeding 20% of project cost. The interaction between the students and the resource person was highly motivating to all the participants. Session came to an end with the feedback of the students.
